BANT

Also called: BANT framework, Budget Authority Need Timeline

Definition

BANT is a sales qualification framework that checks four things about a prospect: Budget, Authority (who decides), Need (the problem to solve) and Timeline (when they want it solved).

How it works

BANT gives a salesperson a short checklist for any new lead:

  • Budget: Can they afford a solution in your range, or are they expecting something very different?
  • Authority: Is this person the decision-maker, or do others need to sign off?
  • Need: Do they have a real problem you solve well?
  • Timeline: When do they need it, and is there a reason for that date?

A lead that checks all four is worth active pursuit. A lead missing one or two may still be worth nurturing; for example, a strong need with a timeline next year.

BANT is old and simple, which is both its strength and its limit. Many teams now start with Need instead of Budget, because asking about money first can feel abrupt, and because need usually determines the rest. Variations and alternatives exist, but the four questions remain a useful baseline for small teams.

Example

A commercial cleaning company gets a WhatsApp message from an office manager asking for a quote for a 6,000-square-foot office.

Over a few messages the rep learns:

  • Need: nightly cleaning, plus carpet cleaning twice a year.
  • Timeline: their current contract ends in six weeks.
  • Authority: the office manager gathers quotes; the operations director signs.
  • Budget: they’re paying a known amount now and want similar or better value.

The rep saves each answer to a field on the deal, then offers a walk-through with both the office manager and the director.

Using BANT in chat

In a message thread, BANT shouldn’t read like a form. Ask one question at a time, tie it to what the customer just said and explain why you’re asking. “Who else will weigh in on the decision? I want to make sure the quote covers what they’ll ask about” lands better than “Are you the decision-maker?”

Why it matters for messaging teams

Chat inquiries are often short and informal. BANT keeps qualification consistent across a team, so every rep gathers the same basics and records them in the same custom fields.

Common mistakes

  • Running through all four questions in the first message.
  • Disqualifying on budget before understanding the need.
  • Treating BANT as a score instead of a conversation guide. See lead scoring for the difference.
  • Not writing the answers down.
